Platonic Season 1, Episode 4 recap "Divorce Party"

Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne in "Platonic," premiering May 24, 2023 on Apple TV+.

Apple TV+ Platonic season 1 episode 4, delves deeper into the lives of its main characters, Will and Sylvia. This episode highlights the immaturity and struggles faced by both protagonists.

In this recap, we’ll explore the events and themes of the episode, providing insights and analysis along the way.

In the opening scene, it becomes evident that Will is far from being a responsible adult. His attempt to pursue a much younger woman is abruptly interrupted by her roommate, who insists on watching the finale of the popular TV show Succession.

This scene sets the tone for the episode, exposing Will's lack of maturity and his inability to envision a fulfilling future. Meanwhile, Sylvia, another central character, is grappling with her own set of challenges.

Encouraged by Charlie, one of Will's friends, she receives the contact information of Kirk Friedkin, a partner at a law firm who may be able to offer her a job. While Sylvia explores her career prospects, she attends a divorce party, which sparks an idea within her — to organize a similar event for Will.

The divorce party takes place in a restaurant, bringing together Will's friends, including Andy, Omar, and Reggie, alongside some of Reggie's fraternity buddies. However, what starts as a seemingly lighthearted gathering, quickly descends into hyper-masculine chaos.

The group collectively decides to visit a strip club, a choice that conflicts with Sylvia's sensibilities.

During a conversation with Sylvia, it becomes apparent that Will possesses some degree of self-awareness regarding the sorry state of his life. He hopes Sylvia's presence at the strip club will add a layer of irony to his, otherwise, concerning behavior.

This interaction hints at Will's realization that his life lacks direction and purpose.

Instead of going to the strip club, a compromise is reached — drugs. Sylvia agrees to indulge in drugs, unaware that they primarily consist of ketamine.

However, her experience takes a turn for the worse as she falls into a K-hole, a state of dissociation induced by the drug. Throughout the episode, Sylvia embarrasses herself in front of another parent, causes damage to multiple shelves in a store, and eventually finds herself dialing Kirk Friedkin's number at 2AM.

While under the influence of ketamine, Sylvia's judgment is impaired, leading her to make a questionable decision to call Kirk Friedkin in the middle of the night. This impulsive action adds another layer of complexity to Sylvia's already tumultuous journey.

Amidst the chaos surrounding Sylvia, there is a glimmer of hope for Will. He connects with Peyton, the girl from the opening scene, and a potential relationship begins to blossom.

The introduction of Peyton into Will's life raises questions about how this connection might influence and guide him towards a more fulfilling path.

As Will's life potentially takes a positive turn, the question arises: what will become of Sylvia? If Will manages to overcome his immaturity and develop a meaningful relationship, Sylvia's role in his life may change significantly.

The episode leaves viewers with a sense of uncertainty regarding Sylvia's future.

Platonic season 1 episode 4 masterfully portrays the complexities and flaws of its characters. Will's immaturity and Sylvia's struggles are showcased through various events, including the chaotic divorce party and Sylvia's drug-induced misadventure.

With the introduction of potential new relationships, the dynamics between the characters promise further development and exploration in upcoming episodes.

Platonic season 1 episode 5 "My Wife's Boyfriend" will be released on Apple TV+ on June 7, 2023, with a run time of 33 minutes.
